Strong Nuclear Force and Quantum Chromodynamics

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory of the strong nuclear force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It describes the interactions of quarks, via their colour quantum numbers. It is an unbroken gauge theory. The gauge bosons are gluons. It has a similar structure to QED, but with one important difference: the gauge group is non-Abelian, SU(3), and hence the gluons are self-interacting. This results in a negative β-function and hence asymptotic freedom at high energies and strong interactions at low energies.
