Earth is about to capture a new mini-moon for 56 days.
This mini-moon is asteroid 2024 PT5, a space rock measuring 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter. It likely originated in the Arjuna asteroid belt. It’s much smaller than the large asteroids that usually make the news.
However, its small size makes it more susceptible to being temporarily captured by Earth’s gravity—giving it the chance to become a mini-moon.
