The authors support and defend the grand strategy of “deep engagement” of the United States with the world in military, economic and political matters. Accordingly, the United States is said to be ‘pursuing the three overlapping objectives that define its grand strategy: managing the external environment to reduce near- and long-term threats to US national security; promoting a liberal economic order to expand the global economy and maximize domestic prosperity; and creating, sustaining, and revising the global institutional order to secure necessary interstate cooperation on terms favorable to US interests.’ (P. 1, 2) To substantiate their claim, arguments are advanced to refute the retrenchment and declinist theorists. On the other hand, the rationale and the costs and benefits of deep engagement in terms of global security and economy are well and cogently discussed and analyzed. All relevant topics such as unipolarity, imperial overreach, struggle between the status quo and the revisionist powers, global power shift from West to East and the unique superpower status of the United States are covered.
